People Group Focus: Digo of Tanzania, East Africadigowoman

Although 99.5 percent of the Digo people consider themselves Muslim, animism and witchcraft may have a greater influence on them. Witch doctors are consulted regularly, and blood sacrifices are very significant. Most Digo live on small farms and produce little more than enough for survival. Their homes are made of stick and mud with a thatched roof. Floors are dirt, but are kept swept clean.

As the head of family units, elderly men are highly respected and are very influential in their villages. Most women do not read, and the literacy rate among the Digo is about 50 percent. The book of Genesis has been translated into the Digo language, and work has been started on the Gospel of Luke. There are  some tapes of gospel recordings available in their language. There are a few churches in the Digo area, but few Digo attend these churches. There are also manyTZflag mosques, and these are well attended.

Prayer Points for the Digo

  • DigoboyPray that the Digo will accept the God of truth, the only One who can give life.

  • The showing of the Jesus film recently went very well and more than 200 Digo watched the film. Please pray for more chances like this to get the Gospel out to large groups of Digo unbelievers.
  • At the Jesus Film showing, 200 Gospels of Luke were given into eager Digo hands. Pray that God's Word would pierce the hearts of the Digo and draw them into a relationship with Him.
  • As a result of showing the J Film, the missionaires have two more invitations to show the film at weddings.  Hundreds of people attend weddings. One couple wants all night movies about Jesus Himself instead of the parties that usually go along with a Digo wedding.  Pray that through these opportunities the Gospel will get into the hands of many Digo and God will be glorified.

Think Graduation. Think Journeyman.

Hey! This is Scott in the Journeyman office. You are headed back to school from a missions experience, from your hometown, summer school, or just plain working to pay the bills. Wherever this note finds you, I want to challenge you about what you will do after graduation. Maybe you've considered the fantastic opportunities for international mission service through the IMB's two-year Journeyman Program!

We have a lost and hurting world out there, and you might be just the one to make a difference in some corner of it. One of the best things you can do right now is to get informed about post-graduation options! At www.go2years.com, you will find a host of valuable information about how to do more than just jump-start your career after graduation.

Write to me at journeyman@imb.org and I can help you to sort out whether the Jman Program is right for you. We need education majors, computer experts, business majors, science majors, nurses, farmers and even psychology and religion majors.

Check out the actual requests on the books now!

Whatever year you are in school, it's never too early to think about how you will impact your world after college graduation!

Blessings in Christ,

Scott - ISC/Journeyman Department, IMB

Persecuted Church: Eritrea, Northern Africa

A group of 51 Christians were imprisioned this past spring as they worshiped in secret in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea. All but four of the believers have been incarcerated in a military training camp. The arrests bring the total number of Protestant Christians known to be jailed in Eritrea to 347. The "crimes" include attending "illegal" worship services, possessing Bibles, or witnessing about their faith. Some of these believers, including a number of soldiers, have been in prison for nearly two years. Stand in prayer for your brothers and sisters in Eritrea. Ask God to comort them in captivity and give them justice. Pray for a massive surge of the Holy Spirit to sweep across Eritrea.

MarySlessorMissionary Hero: Mary Slessor

By Lesley Branscum

Bold, fearless, courageous, and gutsy all describe Mary Slessor. She gained her strength through Christ and constantly repeated, "God and one are always a majority." The spunky, "reckless lassie" from Scotland toiled among and loved the Nigerians of the Calabar. They, in turn, called her "Ma" and many followed her Christ.
