Tsunamis Report

People Group Focus: Acehnese of Indonesia

acehnese childThe Indian Ocean tsunamis of December 26, 2004, has exposed the world to heart-wrenching pictures and stories of people who are destitute, wounded and fearful searching for loved ones and belongings. One of the hardest hit areas is the northern tip of the Indonesian island of Sumatra , home to the Acehnese [ Ah -chen-eez] people. Not only has Aceh [ Ah -cheh] been in the news for losing more than 150,000 people in the tsunamis, but also because of a ceasefire between the Indonesian military and the Aceh rebels, offered by the rebels so that relief and aid workers could enter the area and begin work.

The rebels-called the Free Aceh Movement-have been fighting for independence from the Indonesian government since 1976.

This is nothing new to the Acehese. They have fought fervently for their independence and for their Islamic faith. The Acehnese are proud of their reputation as staunch Muslims and view themselves as defenders of the Islamic faith.

Story from the Field: The broken heart of Aceh

Banda Aceh is commonly known as "the doorway to Mecca ." This area has historically been a stopping point for Muslims journeying by ship to Mecca.

The Acehnese are considered to be among the most devout Muslims in the area. It is hard to separate their religion and culture, and they are very persistent on keeping three of the five pillars of Islam-confession, prayer, fasting, tithing, and pilgrimage to Mecca.

There are few, if any, known Christians among the Acehnese. The provincial government of Banda Aceh is threatening to ban aid workers from the area because of concern for the safety of the workers in light of renewed rebel activity and because of the fear of workers tsunamiphototrying to "Christianize" local residents.

Prayer Points for the Acehnese

acehnese child

Pray for the Acehnese to find hope in Jesus as they piece their lives back together after the major devastation.

Pray that many Acehnese will begin to question their traditional faith because of the tsunamis and that they will become seekers of truth. Ask God to reveal Himself as Jesus to them in dreams and visions.

Pray that God will send laborers who can effectively cross the Muslim cultural barriers.

Feb. 3 is the day of prayer and fasting for the Acehnese of Indonesia.

DID YOU KNOW?

globeFor many Indians, the only way they know to respond to failure and despair is suicide. Students commit suicide when their grades come in lower than their parents' expectations. Young women commit suicide when a marriage does not work out. And farmers commit suicide when their crops do not produce. Indians affected by the Dec. 26 tsunamis already have commented to reporters that they have nothing for which to live. Pray that God would strengthen these hurting people and keep them from suicide. Pray that His ambassadors would introduce them to J esus, the author of life and hope.

Persecuted Church: Yemen

At least one, possibly three, Yemeni believers are in prison because of their faith in Jesus Christ.   So far is that they refuse to recant, despite threats and possible torture.   Pray for their strength, that the LORD Himself will minister to them, and that the Holy Spirit will bring the Scriptures to their minds.

Other believers have been threatened, intimidated, searched, and called in for questioning.   Pray that they will not have a spirit of fear, but of power, love and of a sound mind.   Pray that they will not be silenced, but will continue to be unashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.   Pray that their faith will not waiver, but that they will trust in His ability to guard what they have entrusted to Him.

Special Request from the Tsunamis Front:

The acres of rubble and ruin were almost too much to take in. A young man introduced himself and offered to show us where his house had stood. 'My father and mother are dead,' he said. 'My brother and his two little babies died, too.' He pointed to what was left of the fishing boat that he and his two brothers had used to support their family. When we reached the home of this young man's sister, it became clear that this was actually a clan of families. There remained several family members who were anxious to partner with us for the rebuilding of their village. The pain and loss were perfectly clear. 'May we pray for you?' we asked. Afterwards, with teary eyes, they gave us a photo of their home and wrote their address on the back. 'Please don't forget us,' they said." Faithful intercessors, please don't forget to pray for the survivors of the December 26 tsunamis.

Bible Study: Global Proclamation Demands Persevering Prayer

By Evan Burns

Persevering prayer is key to overcoming the hard-hearted resistance of the lost. Immediately following the Lord's Prayer in Luke 11:5-9, Jesus taught a critical lesson about the role of perseverance in prayer.

To teach us persevering prayer, Jesus uses a strange parable about a man who persistently asks for bread from a friend. Read more about the lesson Jesus taught.
