People Group Focus: The Mon of Myanmar (Burma)

burmapicAccording to Mon religion, Theravada Buddhism, the spirit can leave the body while a person sleeps, often taking the form of a butterfly. The Mon world is alive with spirits of both animate and inanimate objects. Mon shamans interpret messages and bad omens, and Buddhist monks may be called upon to exorcise spirits. Prayer Points for the Mon

  • monkwithbuddhaThe boulder on which the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda sits in southern Mon territory is said to rest on a hair of the Buddha, holding the boulder and the pagoda in place supernaturally. Pray that this boulder would topple and with it, the stronghold of Buddhism among the Mon and in Myanmar would topple.
  • Ask the Father the send laborers into this ripe harvest field. Could you be a laborer here?
  • Pray for the protection of believers from persecution. Jesus prayed that God not take his followers out of the world, but that he would protect them by the power of his name (John 17).
  • Ask God to remind believersin Myanmar that it is their unity and their love for each other that will draw other Mon to Jesus.

boymonkDID YOU KNOW?

globe The majority of Buddhist monks are simply young men who are performing a "duty" for their families.   There is rarely a high level of commitment to Buddhist thought among the monks.   They are searching for Truth, too!

Bible Study: Ego: the Nemesis of Missions

By Dr. Gailyn Van Rheenen

Human ego is likely the foremost obstacle to effective missions. Therefore, missionaries must be challenged to define who they are in relationship to God. In this brief Monthly Missiological Reflection, 2 Corinthians 4:7 provides a basis for this self-evaluation.

Used by permission from Gailyn Van Rheenen. All of Dr. Van Rheenen's Missiological Reflections are archived on the Missiology Homepage.
