People Group Focus: Chechens of Russia

Chechen flagThey've been in the news this week for possibly murdering an American journalist and earlier this month for holding children hostage in a Russian school, a standoff that ended in a bloodbath. The clan-oriented Chechens are strongly rooted in their land and known for fighting for their independence. Living in a small territory of the Caucus Mountains between the Russian and Georgian republics, they are a very proud people who want their freedom from the Russian government, but they have no one to lead them to spiritual freedom in Christ. Prayer Points for the Chechen

  • Pray for God to draw the Chechen people to Himself because God tells us that no one can come to Jesus unless God draws him (John 6:44).
  • The Chechens want freedom. Pray that God would reveal Himself to them as the True Source of Eternal Freedom (2 Cor. 3:17).
  • Ask God to send laborers to the harvest fields among the Chechens (Matt. 9:37 - 38).
  • Ask God to set apart Chechen believers by their obedience to His word (John 17:17) so that non-believeing Chechens will praise God for the good works they see in the believers' lives (Matt. 5:16).

DID YOU KNOW?

GLOBEIn Europe and Russia, Baptists are viewed as a cult, especially in the Catholic countries and typically are lumped in with Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses. Lifestyle, work ethic, and personal integrity are not even considered. Because they aren't Catholic or Orthodox, Baptists are despised.

Persecuted Church: Romania

After having conficts with two Orthodox priests in one village of Romania's southern Olt county, a Romanian missionary and the priests met with the police. The priests complained about the work the missionary was doing in the village, but the police said they did not see any problems because he was working within the law. The priests, however, continued to harass and try to keep the missionary and others from ministering. Because of that, more people are being drawn to see and hear what the priests are complaining about. Praise God for turning into good what men meant evil.

The next day, they began the first monder-day Baptist church in Germany. Read more . . .

Bible Study: Annointing with Oil in Hard Times

By Philip Keller
