People Group Profile: Crimean Tatars of Central Asia
Crimean Tatars (pronounced tah-TARS) are a proud people with a history filled with struggle. They converted to Islam in the 10th century. In the 16th century, they suffered unspeakable atrocities at the hands of Ivan the Terrible, all supposedly in the name of Jesus. That time in their history continues to be an obstacle to the gospel! During World War II, Stalin had them deported en masse to Soviet Central Asia. They spent their years of exile in Uzbekistan, Siberia and the Urals. In 1989, Crimean Tatars were allowed to return to the Crimean peninsula and about half of them have returned, hoping to find a new start and rediscover their roots. The Tatars speak Russian and have been influenced by Russian society over the years. Historically, Crimean Tatars have considered themselves to be Islamic; but most are nominal in their observance. Pray for the minds of the Crimean Tatars to be open to the Father and His Truth.
