Day of Prayer and Fasting for World Evangelization

More than 400 people groups – about 26 million people – live in the Amazon Basin of South America. Most have never heard of Jesus Christ. About 85 people groups live isolated deep in the jungle in villages too remote to be reached by missionaries.

But prayers can go where feet cannot.

On May 11 Lead your student group to set aside a meal or an entire day to fast and pray for the unreached peoples of the Amazon Basin. Prayer is their only hope.

People Group Focus: The Peranakan of Malaysia

There are a variety of Peranakan peoples in Malaysia. The term "Peranakan" refers to any ethnic group that intermarried with Malay and did not assimilate into the Malay culture and religion., The largest group is the 230,000 Baba Chinese of peninsular Malaysia. Basically, the Baba Chinese are the descendants of Chinese who intermarried with Malay in the mid 15th to 17th centuries prior to the large influx of Chinese into Malaysia in the 19th century.

The Baba Chinese practice Mahayana Buddhism which is a mixture of ancestral worship and animism. While there are some believers among the Baba Chinese the witness is not large enough to effectively reach the rest of this group. Many Chinese believers live near the Baba Chinese, but they often overlook these near-culture relatives in evangelistic efforts.

Prayer Points for the Peranakan of Malaysia

  • Pray that God will burden and give vision to Chinese believers in Malaysia to reach out with the Gospel to the Baba Chinese who live near them.
  • Ask God to prepare the hearts of Peranakan people to receive the Gospel.
  • Pray for many leaders to emerge among the Peranakan people to disciple the new believers.
  • Pray that Peranakan people will clearly discern between deception and truth.

Persecuted Church: North Korea

BANGKOK, April 25 (Compass Direct News) – In a report released this month by a U.S. government body, refugee testimonies confirm severe persecution of Christians throughout North Korea. In the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom’s report, refugees said that Christianity remained a key factor in the interrogation of people repatriated from China to North Korea. The report, released April 15, found that consequences are harsh for those found violating state policies on religion. “For example, recently many North Korean refugees have Bibles with them when they are repatriated,” one refugee said. “If you get caught carrying a Bible, there is no way to save your life.” Refugees interviewed said that punishment for owning a Bible could include execution and the imprisonment of “three generations” of the owner’s family.
