Lula Whilden
With a heart for the most destitute, Lula had to visit with the beggar woman one more time. She prayed she wouldn’t be too late.

Lula Whilden hurried to the beggar woman’s tiny hut when she received word that the elderly woman was dying. Lula had offered her assistance and a kind word on many occasions when she passed the woman who lived near the mission station. On this day, however, Lula was anxious to share the story of Jesus and His dying on the cross for sinners. Lula had recently started missionary service, and she was concerned because she only had a beginner’s knowledge of Chinese. As Lula spoke, however, the woman’s face beamed with understanding and she trusted in Jesus to save her. This was the first person Lula led to the Lord in China, but she was not the last. Lula was a gifted evangelist who shared the gospel with thousands during her 45 years in China.
Lula was most drawn to China’s destitute women. It was said of Lula, “The more neglected, the greater was her love.” She spent endless days sharing Christ door to door, but also among women who lived on tiny boats along the Pearl River. Despised by their community, the houseboat women found hope and compassion in Lula’s love and her message of Christ. Lula also started a home and school for blind girls, who were treated as slaves. Redeeming them for as little as $10, Lula provided more than freedom. She gave them endless love and care and the opportunity for eternity with Jesus.
