In memoriam: Missionary emeritus LeRoy Benjamin Hogue, 1930-2024

LeRoy Benjamin Hogue, an International Mission Board missionary emeritus who shared the gospel in Taiwan and Singapore, died May 8, 2024, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was 93.  

LeRoy was born Nov. 19, 1930, in Oklahoma City to the late Charles William and Katie Beatrice Hogue. He graduated from Capitol Hill High School, Oklahoma City, and received the Bachelor of Arts from Oklahoma Baptist University, Shawnee, Oklahoma, and the Doctor of Theology from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Fort Worth, Texas. 

During college, LeRoy met Janell Ohagan. After LeRoy’s graduation, he and Janell married on June 28, 1953. For the next decade, LeRoy pastored several churches while pursuing his doctorate from seminary. While seeking appointment LeRoy wrote, “It was during that first year at seminary that I received my first impression that God wanted us on the mission field.” In a Mission Day service in 1956, LeRoy promised God he would go anywhere God wanted him to go.  

In 1966, the International Mission Board appointed LeRoy and Janell missionaries to Taiwan. LeRoy’s work included evangelism, pastoring and serving as teacher at Taiwan Baptist Theological Seminary in Taipei. Later, LeRoy also served as teacher at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Singapore. LeRoy and Janell retired after 30 years of missionary service. 

LeRoy is preceded in death by Janell, his wife of 59 years, and one son-in-law, Mark Fountain.  

He is survived by daughter Sue Ann Fountain; son Charles David Hogue (Michelle); son Thomas LeRoy Hogue (Putu Ari Wismarni); son Andrew Kevin Hogue (Fangjie); and seven grandchildren. 

A funeral service was held June 21 at Temple Baptist Church in Shawnee with burial in Resthaven Cemetery, Oklahoma City.
