The Sama people live in Sabah, East Malaysia, and are predominantly Sunni Muslim. Many came from Sulu, Philippines, and still maintain close relations with people there. Most Sama are fishermen, farmers, or traders of sea products. Though they observe daily prayers of Islam, there are also traces of traditional worship, such as honoring the spirits of the deceased by offering special prayers.
